Tips for a Successful Remarriage

While nobody enters into a marriage thinking that they are going to get divorced on the other side, divorce is just as much a reality in modern society as marriage itself. When people do get divorced, many want to get married again someday; however, they may be worried that their next marriage might wind up in the same spot as their last one. For people who are worried about divorce impacting their next marriage, there are a few tips that everyone should keep in mind for a successful remarriage.

Do not Expect the Next Marriage to be the Only Source of Happiness

When people get divorced, it is not unusual to feel a little bit down. Some people may think that they will never find happiness again. When they realize that this is not true, they are excited about having a new relationship and may think that this new relationship will bring them all of the happiness that they have ever wanted; however, this is an unrealistic expectation. If people think that their marriage is going to be the only source of happiness in their life, they will wind up putting their own wants and dreams on hold to make the marriage work. This is how the next marriage will fail. Make sure that the expectations are realistic. It is important for everyone to have individual interests and hobbies. There are activities that will fill up one’s time that he or she will not necessarily participate in with their spouse.

Do Not Rush to Find Another Life Partner

Some people who get divorced think that their biological clock is ticking. They may believe that they need to find another life partner fast or their window of opportunity is going to close. This simply is not true. There are people of all ages out there who are looking for someone to spend their life with. Rushing into a new marriage is a quick way to wind up in another divorce. Take the time to make sure that both partners are compatible in every way. This will provide the best opportunity for success. People should not be afraid to spend time alone. Often times, people may run into another relationship because they do not want to be on their own. This may lead to people not partnering with someone who is right for them because they rushed into a new relationship without waiting enough time for someone who might be a better fit.

Do Nott Focus on the Past

People who have been divorced who enter into a new relationship may be tempted to try and make sure that their new relationship is different from their prior one in every way; however, this does not show proper respect to the new person who is involved in the relationship. Do not try to compare this person to the past spouse. This means that all of the attention is still focused on the past, overlooking what is happening in the present. Accept the new partner for who they are and do not try to change them. It is important to move on with your life with your new partner and refrain from dwelling on your past and on whatever situation led to your divorce.

Consider a Prenuptial Agreement

It may be a good idea to consider a Prenuptial Agreement if you plan to marry a second time. No one ever thinks their marriage will end in divorce, but having a prenuptial agreement in place will protect you in the event your marriage comes to an end. If you are entering into your second or third marriage, you may already have a spousal support obligation. You may be financially strained and will want to limit your exposure to having to make additional alimony payments should your marriage end in divorce. There are many reasons why it may be a good idea to enter into a prenuptial agreement, particularly if you are entering into a second or third marriage. You may want to consult with an experienced family attorney if you are considering getting married.
